Fly Me Away To Big Sur

Anyone who knows me well would know that I love the open sea, be it beaches, islands or ragged coastlines. If there’s a hint of the sea anywhere, I generally gravitate towards it – motion sickness or no motion sickness.

So, it comes as no surprise that Big Sur in California is one of my must-see places when I eventually get myself over to the United States. There are loads of natural wonders in that immense country, so what’s my deal with Big Sur?

Simple – the coastline at its finest.

Big Sure Coastline ScreeshotSeriously. Look at that coastline!

Big Sur just begs to be discovered at one’s own pace. Whether it be through driving, hiking, swimming, camping, walking and maybe even a little bit of running. Ok, who am I kidding with this running bit? I’ll just stick to yoga.

Anyhoo, it seems like the perfect place for me to do all that and more. And more being staring at the ocean, meditating under a tree, taking a nap under the starry skies, wrestling with setting up my tent. Well, you get the picture.

So, imagine how I felt when I came across this fantastic video by Andrew Julian celebrating everything that is magical about Big Sur and why we (and I really mean me!) need to see this place for ourselves.

Not only to admire the stunning beauty of this majestic coastline, but also to remind ourselves how small we truly are in the grand scheme of things; all our problems, all our petty complaints lay waste at the edge of Big Sur’s rugged cliffs.

Time and time again, we are reminded that we are intrinsically connected to the ocean. And I honestly think we need to find our way back to embracing Mother Earth and all her bountiful treasures. In other words, life can be simple if we took the time to look beyond ourselves.

Right. Enough contemplation. Road trip, anyone?
