Songs are capable of many things – inspiring us, giving us hope when there is none, soothing our heartbreaks, creating new memories and making us remember special (and not-so-special) moments of our past too. We all have reasons for loving the songs we love. But some songs just seem to reach out to you even more than others; particularly when thoughts of other places come into mind. And for me, these songs I will be sharing with you are representative of my wanderlust.
I get all misty-eyed whenever David Gray’s “Babylon” comes blaring out of my headphones. From the moment I first heard it, many moons ago, I promised myself that someday I will listen to it in London. I have no idea why London came to mind. Maybe it had to do with him mentioning London in the song, or maybe it’s just a bloody good song! But it still seemed to fit what I expected the city would feel like – vibrant, full of life and a sense of longing for something bigger than yourself. So, when I finally played it on one of the train rides there, it was absolute magic. It felt right. It felt like London.
Sunday all the lights of London
Shining , Sky is fading red to blue ,
I’m kicking through the autumn leaves,
And wondering where it is you might be going to
Elbow is one of my favourite bands in the world. And I’m just glad that the boys have obliged me (and yes, thousands of other fans) with a new album. One of the new songs that have struck a chord with me is “New York Morning”. I don’t think I have ever heard a song portray a city so eloquently as this song has – “Every painted lining battered, like a building in this town, Sings a life of proud endeavour and the best that man can be”. Just. Brilliant.
Me, I see a city and I hear a million voices
Planning, drilling, welding, carrying their fingers to the nub,
Reaching down into the ground, stretching up into the sky ,
Why? Because they can, they did and do so you and I could live together
This next song has more to do with being in love than anything else. And isn’t love very much a part of wanderlust? Anyway, it somehow makes me want to hop on a bicycle and roam through the scenic streets of Amsterdam or Dublin; or anywhere else where I wouldn’t be mowed down by on-coming traffic. Naturally, I blame the video for this obsession. And who knows? Maybe some day I would be cycling along to this song on a lovely sunny day. Preferably with Ben Howard. Well, a girl can dream.
Give me shelter, or show me heart
Come on love, come on love,
Watch me fall apart, watch me fall apart
There are many songs that I would love to share with everyone. But, I shall leave that for another day. I do hope you will enjoy the ones I have shared though. And let me know what songs get your wanderlust feet all tapping away.
